Empathy, the ability to relate to other people’s emotions, can facilitate more creative problem solving in many contexts. While some believe this is an innate quality, it can also be viewed as a skill that can be improved with time and effort. The Sub Rosa design group has identified seven features of empathic thinking and provided self-reflective questions to help people improve on these features. Questions include interrogations of one’s own personal biases, thinking about how to be sensitive to others’ needs, reflecting on how we have been challenged in the past, and how to facilitate listening to others rather than talking over them.
