The Hidden Costs of E-Commerce

January 16, 2017 By RhinoSupport Leave a Comment

No matter where you live in this world, e-commerce is growing. If you are a business owner, chances are you have an online presence. During the Christmas holidays, 73% of UK consumers buy gifts online. That statistic is pretty close to what the rest of the world is doing as well, on average.

For many entrepreneurs, e-commerce has allowed them to explore new markets and has enabled them to experience significant growth. They’ve used services like 4xbuyerprotection.com to offer shipping insurance and product satisfaction while offering online visitors an immediate way for them to communicate through live chat. Other entrepreneurs, however, haven’t been as lucky.

Part of the problem has been the significant costs and lack of revenue from offering free delivery and free returns on their products in an attempt to keep prices comparable with large corporations.

Key takeaways from an article touching on this subject from The Guardian:

  • Some small businesses are actively turning away from doing business online without figuring out a way to make money first.
  • 58% of consumers said a retailer’s returns policy has an effect on their decision to make online purchases.
  • Some customers are told that companies want to reduce online losses by stopping free returns. Then customers state that they would not shop on a site that does not have some type of a guarantee.

“When consumers click to order, they don’t see it as buying until it’s landed on their kitchen table and they can just send it back.”
